When younger, I did a lot of manual labor…road construction, farming, landscaping. The physical toll, in the sultry hot summertime, could be enormous. It was important to find a pace that enabled me to give a full day’s work for my boss.
Later, white collar work demanded, surprisingly, the same strategy…find a pace that enabled me to give a full measure of work all day, every day.
And now, I realize that relationships and family and commitments and volunteer work and recreation and all of life DEMANDS a pace that allows me, and you, to both give and enjoy at the same time.
If our pace outruns our physical stamina, our emotional reservoir, and our spiritual depth, we’re doomed to quiet misery, burnout, frustration.
A healthy rhythm comes when we hear our intuitive selves telling us to slow down and enjoy the moment…and then obeying that calling. It takes a conscious decision to develop a desirable rhythm.
Rhythm carries a relationship to music. Perhaps that’s a good way to visualize our lives…living a dance, hearing the melodic, soaring. There is joy. There is a light spirit. Life is good, as He intended.
Robert Earl Keen played at Gruene Hall last Friday. It was my first time to see him in concert and, as expected, he is the Real Deal. I love this photo below that Austin photographer, Darren Carroll, took of him… His penchant for observation of ordinary life situations followed by clever commentary is part of his attraction.
That makes me think about all those business people traveling up and down I-35 between Austin and San Antonio. They stay in chain hotels, enduring the background noise of heavy traffic and relentless pace. I wish they knew that five minutes off I-35, in beautiful and laconic Gruene, a gentler and soothing opportunity awaits them. These unwittingly weary travelers can slow down, breathe deeply, and feel the rush of business drain away by staying at the Gruene Mansion Inn. We have free wifi, full breakfasts, comfortable and unique rooms, and an easy rhythm. Five restaurants are within 200 yards. Gruene Hall, with live and free music (Monday through Thursday nights), is next door. Eat a fabulous meal, drink a cold beer, and listen to live music. We've been gently resisting change (and the frantic rush) since 1872. Come join us.

Mornings spent enjoying breakfast on our patio or the porch of our river view rooms overlooking the Guadalupe, offer a relaxing start to the day. Our feature this morning was a decadent crepe with ham, spinach, butter, garlic and cheese folded into a perfect pocket, drizzled with our homemade salsa. Our breakfast was complete with a side of fruit, bacon, tarragon potatoes, fresh orange juice and Texas pecan flavored coffee. Our breakfast is served in the mansion from 8:30 to 10:30 each morning. If you plan on staying for business and need to start your commute early, we can always accommodate an earlier breakfast to fit into your morning schedule.

We decided to bend our rules a little to accommodate this mid-week wedding. Mark and Alicia were the sweetest couple, it was such a joy working with them. We are blessed to have been part of such a beautiful moment in their lives.
